Hello everyone! We decided that it was once again time for a little photo shoot of the two of us. So we took off for a little time in the snow...It's good for us to be on this side of the lens sometimes. It really helps me to know what you all feel when we are taking photos of you....and you know...it was really fun.

We took a few images some fun, some more serious...my cheeks were aching with laughter and my eyes watering too...David has a way to make me laugh in the most natural and fun ways! I see how important he is to our clients...his not so serious side is fun and light.

We are looking forward to 2010...some new and exciting ventures are coming our way and your way too...we'll keep you updated as they arise. For now, we are preparing for our upcoming wedding season soon to be upon us.

Christmas Time

Christmas Time....

I love giving and receiving gifts but sometimes it can be a little overwhelming at Christmas...One of my favorite gifts that I received this year was this Old Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook...My Aunt gave it to me and I think it's been in my family for years...I just love the idea of gifts that can be handed down to the next generation. A fabulous idea for next year...recycled or "vintage" gifts! I love that no money was spent on this gift..love it!!

This year we hosted two Christmas dinners at our home and I just love the memories that were made. We had time for some fun in the snow...enjoying friends and family and eating way too much good food.

This Christmas we also had to say goodbye to one of my Auntie's...as she was diagnosed with lung cancer and died shortly after Christmas and two of David's buddies who just recently died in Afghanistan...We never know how much time we have with the people in our lives and we were once again reminded of this precious gift, at Christmas time.

Such a beautiful day! Christmas is such a special day to begin with and to shoot a wedding on Boxing Day was so much fun! It was a lovely day for Cory and Nicole....the weather was fine, the venues were amazing. I love shooting at St. Joseph's Basilica and the Hotel Mac...those are two of our favorite places to shoot...so classic. Classic beauty is a great way to describe Nicole too...she looks stunning here!
Our last wedding of 2009...wow! We are so thrilled to be in this business and busy all year long. David and I love that people choose us to shoot their weddings. Nicole told us when we met that she just knew we were the photographer's for her wedding. I love to hear that! Thank you Nicole and Cory for choosing us to be a part of your amazing day!

The Genuis Family

The Genuis Family winter photo shoot! This was so much fun...what a wonderful family. We met the Genuis family a little earlier this year when Sarah and Emerson were married and here they are again with Emerson's family for a cute snowy photo shoot!

We have now finished our 2009 wedding year...we'll have the last wedding up here in just a couple of days. We've had a wonderful year and have had the opportunity to meet so many new people. What a rewarding career this is for David and myself....it is full of creativity, love, people and so many blessings. We are so excited for what 2010 will bring! Thanks for stopping by!

Waiting for Christmas.....

It was always so hard for me to wait for Christmas. The smell of goodies baking, the Christmas music, decorating the tree...but, waiting for Christmas day was always the hardest. There is nothing like the joy of Christmas day...I see it all again in my children's eyes, it is so fun to watch them create their own Christmas memories.

David and I are preparing for our final wedding shoot of the year....it's on boxing day...what fun! We are looking so forward to spending that beautiful day with our final bride and groom of the year. We'll keep you updated as best as we can over the Christmas holidays. We would also like to thank all of our brides and grooms for 2009...we had so much fun getting to know you all a wee bit better! A great big thank you to all of our faithful clients who come back year after year to work with us...we had a great year in 2009 and are looking very forward to new things and some changes too for James Design Studios in 2010!

Stefanie and Drew Congratulations on your wedding! It was a beautiful day in Edmonton...yes, It was a little on the cold side (apparently this was the second coldest place on the planet)...but like the great Canadian's that they are....they didn't mind braving the cold for a few outdoor photos....Wow! you two were amazing!

I must admit I was a little worried about the weather and lack of light on this day but we went with it and I am thrilled with how their pictures turned out! A great big Thank You goes out to Vic and the staff at Lillo's on Whyte for allowing us to use their fine music store after hours to get some unique shots. We thought Lillo's would make for some really neat photos since Drew is the lead guitar player for the band Define the Line you can check them out at http://www.myspace.com/definethelineband

I am so happy that the weather didn't stop us...now I know -40 weddings are a possibility for sure!

Sam and Zach...what can I say! David and I had a wonderful time with you two...we went to meet up with this couple the day of the shoot not knowing that David knows Zach..how fun was that. I was about to introduce people and David and Zach start calling out to one another..."Hey...how are you?"...This really is a small world!

Loretta and Jason Congratulations! Wow...this wedding was on one of the coldest days here in Edmonton but that didn't stop this happy couple from enjoying every moment together. David and I had so much fun coming up with creative spots to take photos and I must say...well done to Loretta and her bridesmaids who didn't complain once outside in the cold to get a few snowy pictures! Oh and a huge Thank you goes out to the Edmonton Public Library for allowing us to take some fun pictures inside with all the books!

A Moment in Manhattan.

I was staring at this photo for a while the other day and thought I would post it here for you to see. I took this photo from the Brooklyn Bridge....You can see the Empire State building in the distance and the many building in between. I like this photo because the Empire State Building is recognizable however, it's faded, in the distance and the other buildings stand out a little more vivid.

I started to think that is just what my visit was like. I went to NYC... excited of course to see all the things on my list but, it's when I put the list down and just experienced Manhattan...that I had the most fun. I was able to experience it in a new way...I let the moments happen, had some great conversations with "New Yorker's"and was able to experience a little of this amazing city...kind of like this photo, Yes, the things on my list were great to see too but the vivid moments are those not on a list...they just happened.

A family reunion is a wonderful time to make some memories...Charlene asked if I'd come down and take some photos of her family. What a great idea...all the family is there in this beautiful surroundings, enjoying one another why not capture some great photos too! We are still busy, busy here in the studio...many posts are Christmas gifts and I can't blog about them...until the new year I guess. We are also prepping for the next 4 weddings we have to do in the next two months....wedding season hasn't really slowed down yet...whew...and that is just fine because it's what we love to do!

David and I recently had a chance to visit Vancouver. We visited the city for our 2009 "staff" party and took in the U2 Concert at B.C. Place....that's right our staff party, consisting of David and myself...lol

We had a wonderful time for the three days we were there. We did a mini photo shoot and had a chance to visit with friends...plus the concert was sensational! Vancouver is such a beautiful city...I am so grateful that it is part of Canada!

Congratulations...Carmen and Reid! I was really hoping for warmer weather but this group was great..they didn't complain at all about the weather...."what...a little bit of snow, no problem". Carmen thought it was romantic...I love that girl!! Okay, so this was one of those weddings when I forgot that I was hired and cried twice....had to remind myself that I was not a family member. NYC

New York...One of our favorite cities to visit...this place with so much character and history. This was our second visit to NYC. We all had a list of places we wanted to check out and see...some tourist stops and some places we just wanted to venture out and wander....wandering can be so much fun!
Here she is the Statue of Liberty....very fun to see up close. Major security to get through if you want to get up close and personal with the Statue.

My (David's) picture of the Brooklyn Bridge, in my opinion, turned out well. I love it so much we are making the bridge picture into a 36" x 24" canvas...
The HighLine the old elevated freight railroad line the bottom view.

The NYC Skyline taken from the ferry and a shot of the Guggenheim Museum....the Guggenheim was on my (David's) list...to see a Frank Lloyd Wright design up close...Yeah I was very excited!!
After the Guggenheim we had a little lunch at a park bench near Central Park...then we walked straight through Central Park to see the Museum of Natural History...Certainly worth checking out. We could have spent the whole day just at this one Museum...amazing!!

Canal Street....okay, this was on my (Julie) list! Yes, I wanted to checkout Canal Street not so much to shop but to see if the stories were really true...I heard that people whisper in your ear..."Tiffany, Rolex, Louis Vuitton", as you walk past their stores...As soon as I stepped on to the curb someone was whispering to me...they target market for sure. "Tiffany, Tiffany" they whispered to me...I said " I am looking for sunglasses for my son...they showed their selection and then I asked to see the "Tiffany selection"....they took me to their little spot at the back of the store...unlocked the secret drawer to reveal some Tiffany chains with little lockets. Ooohh...there they were all shiny and sparkling....after a few minutes I said "thank you" and walked away...empty handed. I didn't want to buy anything I am not into having a cheap knockoff or contributing to that part of the counterfeit underground market....I really just wanted the experience!

So I took a photo of the real Tiffany & Co. Store....that was fun too!

I love the directions here....Enter with or buy Metro-Card and agent on duty 5am Mon-4am Sat. When station is closed take the Uptown 4 5 at Wall St & Broadway to Brooklyn Bridge for transfer to J.....Okay, now don't get lost in there! Yeah....I would have been completely lost if not for David's amazing ability to navigate through the subway system.

Times Square at night...so amazing!
This is a view from our hotel window at night... Yes, its the WTC rebuild site. When the 9-11 attacks happened, the Millennium Hilton was damaged from debris. The ribbons in the following shot are for the fallen soldiers, firemen and civilians. We found them outside of a church only a few blocks away... I was in shock seeing so many ribbons hanging from the fence surrounding the church.

We did get some shopping in...It helped that our hotel was located across the street from Century 21 a great discount store...with brand name items.

We had a fantastic time....running here and running there...but loving the experience with our son! We still have so many things we'd love to do in NYC....Next time......

Stuart's New York Adventure.....

Stuart as you've probably guessed is our son...He is so cool...he's got his very own unique style...Stu style we like to call it. When we asked him where he would like to go for a vacation this year he said...."New York City"...we said "Sure!". Our adventure began with a visit to The Empire State building....we got there in time for no lineups yay!!....The Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge....then we just ventured around NYC....visiting Central Park, Canal Street and so many other places.
Here is Stu on the Brooklyn Bridge...just hanging out!
One of the places I wanted to check out was this vintage clothing store....well Stu was interested in buying a vintage bowtie....It was the perfect match for his hat!

Stu taking the Subway....Downtown....Under the Brooklyn Bridge here...Oh my goodness...any brides wanna go and do a shoot under the Bridge with us...it is so amazing there!!

FAO Schwarz was at the Top of his list...Yes, it's fantastic in there and you could probably spend all day in there and spend all your money too!

The Empire State Building....is very big! The bottom picture is a view from the Empire State looking Downtown.Subway again...very loud down there...but really entertaining...saw this guy playing Michael Jackson on his saxaphone....he was really great!
Totally urban playground that we found...by the Highline...Stu had some fun here!
Wow...what an adventure!! I loved that we got to hang out with one of our favorite people in the world....in such a fantastic place! Oh my goodness...I love this city...sometimes I get more excited about it when I am back in Edmonton and realize that yes, I did just go to this amazing place of history and character!

I have this thing about minimalist photography right now so this is one of many images that speaks volumes to me...it's in NYC one of the busiest places and here you barely see two sets of feet walking...almost running across the cross walk...I love it! It was so challenging to take photos in NYC and minimalist photos were even harder for me. So many people walking and bumping into you....I loved it!!
This picture of the hats is so New York....Hats are everywhere and I loved the display of all these characters...you can just imagine a story for every hat that is in there.....Imagine!

Okay...so I am almost ready to put up the mini shoot of Stuart in NYC and of Teddy...Wow...I've been up late every night editing and so excited to show everyone...just a wee bit longer!! Thanks for visiting!

I came home after our wedding on Friday to find....A Shootsac waiting for me....Yay!! My wonderful husband ordered one for me and I was thrilled to be able to use it for Saturday's wedding....Oh, not sure what a shootsac is....well, it is a marvelous little bag to hold my lenses while I run around at weddings like a crazy person shooting all the amazing moments that happen. I simply love being outside....I remember as a child that was where I was most of the time...running free, playing pretend...I was outside, in another world. I must thank my Mother for encouraging me so much to get out into nature....she always says "there is something healing about being out in nature"...Thanks Mom for still coming out to play with me!

Here are some recent images from a trip to the park with the kids and Mom...toes in the sand...berry picking...mmmm, saskatoons are so yummy! running free and playing with toys. We did a scavenger hunt that Mom planned for the kids too...I am very grateful for the memories made and that my Mom is still teaching me about how great it is to be outside.

Backpacking!

This past week we had a chance to get away for a little backpacking with the kids. This was my very first time backpacking. Wow! What can I say...Jasper is beautiful all the time but this was something extra special. I felt like my senses were heightened...the sounds, sights and smells were so lovely to experience! David has been backpacking for years and I've always wanted to go but was a little busy with the babies....now that they have grown a bit we can experience this rugged, fresh, fun family time together! It was awesome!!

Our food for 3 days...Okay, we had a little more than is shown here.
Our water supply was from the river that surrounded us. We had to pump the water for 3 days...the kids kinda liked pumping the water...it tasted great too....No beaver feaver here!
Our little home away from home...so awesome. Our tent was right beside the rushing Athabasca River. There were no other campers anywhere. On our last day we had 4 hikers who stopped in and joined us for lunch...it was nice to chat with them and hear a bit about their adventures from a little farther down the trail. Our hike was 6km in and 6km out...that was just enough for this first time backpacker....but I can't wait for the next hike!!

Way too much fun! Is that even possible? Okay, Kevin is my little brother, but we always seem to have so much fun when we shoot! Running

I remember my very first run. I was about 10 years old and my dad took me for a run. I begged him for this chance to run along side. He told me over and over, it's a long run and you'll be tired. I still begged for the chance. I remember thinking, it's not that hard. Every couple of minutes I would stop and say..."I can't go on, I can't do it!". My dad was so good. He just smiled and said you're almost done,come on, I know it's hard but keep going.

I didn't run again until high school. Yeah, it was a lesson that stayed with me for a very long time. Now, after three children and really no running since high school I've decided this is something I want to do. David and I purchased a treadmill for Christmas...that was our gift to each other. I stared running in December determined to stay with it this time. Well now it's April and amazingly, I have been running every other day since December. This is no easy task though...I love and hate the treadmill. It takes time out of my day, I have to prepare for the run, water, i-pod, running outfit, runners...time, oh yeah, time.

The run begins, then, five minutes in I am thinking. "Okay, five min...I can do this". 10 minutes in, "ready to quit...legs are okay but my throat is getting really dry". My body is starting to feel the run. My mind is telling me.."it's okay if you don't make the 3 mile mark today, really Julie, there is always tomorrow....just give up!" 2 miles into the run I find my groove, my runners high...which, I thought was going to last me the rest of my run. Nope, it lasts a few minutes...back to battling with my mind. Then, I feel the little bead of sweat trickling down my forehead...then the bead runs down my back. Yes, that little bead just gave me the motivation to keep going, I am going to make it...I can make it.

I finally make it the 3 mile mark and I feel great! I feel so good being able to accomplish this personal goal. I have great respect for my dad who has always been a runner and athlete. He is over 60 now and still runs. There are others in my life who inspire me and even a few of our brides...some who have been running a long time and others that I know of are just starting out like me but I am inspired by their spirit too. It takes so much determination to keep going everyday. I never knew how much until I started to run!

Keep going, keep pushing...this has inspired me in other areas of my life that I am only now starting to realize.
